9/11
Twin Towers.
The World Trade Center (WTC) was a 16-acre commercial complex in lower Manhattan that contained seven buildings, a large plaza, and an underground shopping mall that connected six of the buildings. The centerpieces of the complex were the Twin Towers. Each tower had its own area code because they were so big. They had space for about 35,000 people and 430 companies. For a brief period upon their completion in 1973, they were the tallest buildings in the world. They attracted roughly 70,000 commuters and tourists daily.
The towers had been the target of an attack before 9/11. On February 26, 1993, terrorists with links to an Islamist extremist group detonated explosives in a van parked underneath the WTC. Six people were killed and thousands were injured.
The Twin Towers after both planes crashed into them.
Four coordinated terrorist attacks carried out by al-Qaeda, an Islamist extremist group, that happened on the morning of September 11, 2001. The attacks killed 2,977 people. On that morning, 19 terrorists from the Islamist extremist group, al-Qaeda, hijacked four commercial airplanes, deliberately crashing two of the planes into the upper floors of the North and South towers of the World Trade Center complex and a third plane into the Pentagon in Arlington, Va. The Twin Towers ultimately collapsed because of the damage sustained from the impacts and the resulting fires. After learning about the other attacks, passengers on the fourth hijacked plane, Flight 93, fought back, and the plane was crashed into an empty field in western Pennsylvania about 20 minutes by air from Washington, DC. That plane was believed to be heading to The White House. The attacks killed nearly 3,000 people from 93 nations. 2,753 people were killed in New York, 184 people were killed at the Pentagon and 40 people were killed on Flight 93. The hijacked Flight 11 was crashed into floors 93 to 99 of the North Tower (1 WTC) at 8:46 a.m. The hijacked Flight 175 struck floors 77 to 85 of the South Tower (2 WTC) 17 minutes later at 9:03 a.m. These attacks were broadcasted nationally and you didn't even have to be watching TV to know what was going on. All air traffic was shut down that day and all the NFL football games for that week were canceled. The media clearly played a very large roll in the coverage of this terrorist attack. It was also the first time that a terrorist attack was captured live on camera and broadcasted out to the nation. Coverage of the attack by the media captured live footage of the second plane hitting the South Tower. After the attacks it led the United States into war against terror and we Invaded Afghanistan and Iraq.

How did 9/11 bring about change to our culture and society?
The terrorist attack in 2001, brought about a lot of change in the American society and culture, in good ways and bad ways. The media covered the story of the attacks very well, it helped keep the entire nation informed on the tragic event and it helped keep the people of America up-to-date on what what was happening as it happened. The media was capable of switching from their live coverage at the scene in New York to the president in Florida, where he was at that week and addressed the nation after the tragic event. After 9/11many things have changed. Security all around the country and even the world has tightened down a lot. Barricades have been placed in front of almost every government building in Washington D.C. They have also put in metal detectors in many buildings all over, whether its a government building or not. Airports have also gotten much stricter on everything. You are very limited to what you can and cannot take onto a plane anymore. Also at airports they have body scanners that can pick up anything that you have on your person to help protect everybody that is flying and to help prevent hijackings. On all flights that go in and out of Washington D.C. they have an air marshal on them to help prevent anything from going wrong and to keep everyone safe. These things are the good effects that 9/11 has put on our society and culture. This is because without these precautions we could have gotten attacked many more times after 9/11. These precautions may tend to be a nuisance, but they pay off in the long run. The bad effects on 9/11 is that it has not helped with ever man being created equal. Islamic's tend to have a better chance of being profiled than a white person. This is because the hijackers were Islamic and we are currently in a war against Islamic people. Another bad thing that this terrorist attack caused Americans to feel very unsafe in their own country. Nobody ever thought terrorism to the extreme could happen in our country. It made some Americans not to want to trust other countries or other races of people because they felt like they were going to hurt us. Now, not all of that is necessarily true, we are safe in America and not every American hates other countries, but there is that percentage that do. 9/11 impacted America immediately and is still impacting us today.
